AP, IB and Dual-Credit Options for the Senior Year

Earning College Credit at Carmel High School

Are you looking for ways to earn college credit while also completing high school graduation requirements? Carmel High School offers you a variety of options to accomplish this task! College credit can be earned in three different ways:

1. Taking an Advanced Placement (AP) class and completing the corresponding AP exam in May. Each college has its own rules about accepting AP credit so it is strongly advised that you contact each college to learn about their requirements. Good questions to ask include:

    • Which course will I receive credit for at your institution if I perform well on the AP exam?
    • What is the minimum score I need to earn on my AP exam in order to receive credit at your college?

Talk with your teachers and counselor to determine if AP coursework is the right fit for you.

2. Taking an International Baccalaureate (IB) class and completing the corresponding IB exam in the spring. Each college has its own rules about accepting IB credit so it is strong advised that you contact each college to learn about their requirements. Good questions to ask include:

    • Which course will I receive credit for at your institution if I perform well on the IB exam?
    • What is the minimum score I need to earn on my IB exam to receive the credit at your college?

Talk with your teachers and counselor to determine if IB coursework is the right fit for you.

3.  Taking a Dual Credit course and successfully meeting the requirements of the course allows you to earn both high school credit and transcripted college credit. These courses appear both on your Carmel High School transcript and on an official transcript from the college participating in the Dual Credit program (Indiana University, Ivy Tech, Butler University, Ball State University or the University of Indianapolis). Please note that you will need to register for the college credit with the institution directly. There is a fee associated with some of these credits.
